11 dead, 5 injured after train rams into microbus at railway crossing in Bangladesh

A total of 11 passengers were killed and five injured after a train plowed into a minibus at a railway crossing in Bangladesh’s Chattogram district on Friday.

A total of 11 passengers of a microbus were killed and five others injured as a train rammed their vehicle at a rail crossing in Bangladesh’s Chattogram district on Friday.

Of them, nine passengers of the microbus have been identified. All of the deceased were students and teachers of a coaching center called ‘R and J Plus’ located in the Aman Bazar area of the district.

Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahidul Alam said the accident occurred around 12.45pm.

The passengers were on their way back after visiting Khoiyachora waterfall situated on the hills of Mirsharai, when the Dhaka-bound Probhati Express train hit their microbus and dragged it for at least one kilometer, witnesses said.

COMMITTEE FORMED

The railway authorities formed a five-member probe committee, led by Divisional Transport Officer of Railway (Eastern Region) Ansar Ali, to investigate the incident.

Jahangir Hossain, general manager of Railway (Eastern Region), confirmed the matter. He said the committee was asked to submit a report as soon as possible.

ONE ARRESTED

Meanwhile, railway police arrested Saddam Hussain, the gate man of Khaiachhara Rail, on Friday, Nazim Uddin, officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirsarai Railway Police Station said.

Mirsharai fire service personnel went to the spot and recovered the bodies and rescued three other passengers of the microbus and sent them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said Imam Hossain, station officer of the fire service station.
