Student Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) president Mohammad Salman on Monday visited the family of Moinul Haque, who was murdered by the police last week in Dholpur area of Assam’s Darang district. He said that the SIO would sponsor the education of his three children, Mufassidul, Manzoora Begum and Muqaddas Ali.

Mufassidul is currently a student of class 7, Begum is a student of class 3 and Ali is enrolled in Anganwadi. Haque is survived by the aforementioned three children, his wife and elderly father.

He was shot by policemen during a protest held against the state government’s eviction drive in Dholpur on 23 September. The police kept beating him even after he fell down. A cameraman hired by the district administration jumped over his body, which was captured on camera.

A few days before the police violence, authorities had erased almost 800 households including two mosques and a madrassa in the area. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tweeted about the demolition saying that a major part of the land was occupied by the families and they were evicted by the district authorities.
