Central government issued new rules for social media.

The central government has issued new rules for social media companies, OTT platforms, internet-based businesses and digital news outlets.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference, “all social media companies are welcome to do business in India, but accountability on the misuse of social media is also necessary and for this the government has set draft rules. Under the new rules, social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter will be required to remove content from the platform as soon as possible before 36 hours after receiving any government or legal order.”

According to the draft, these companies will have to give all the necessary information within 72 hours to support the investigation of the authorities regarding any disputed content. Also, if a post on social media shows a person to be in a sexual act, then companies must remove such post within a day of receiving the complaint.
