New Delhi:  Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) said that the recent arrests of Maulana Umar Gautam previously known as  Shyam Pratap Singh Gautam and Mufti Qazi Jahangir Alam Qasmi is a part of the UP government’s systematic effort to curtailing one’s right to change his/her religion or belief.

APCR General Secretary, Malik Motasim Khan termed their arrest as an attack on religious freedom of the citizenry of this country.

He further stated, “It is the constitutional duty of the government to promote and protect the individual’s right to adopt a religion or belief of his/her choice but on the contrary the government seems to be more visioned and leaned towards restricting the practice of this right.”
