Rights panel seeks report on Tripura anti- Muslim violence

In the complaint, Gokhale stated that the government machinery under the BJP rule  “acted like a bystander by siding with a rioting mob” despite large-scale violence against a religious minority community.

New Delhi:  Acting on a complaint by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on the recent anti-Muslim violence in Tripura, the official rights watchdog, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued notice to the Tripura chief secretary Kumar Alok and Director General of Police V S Yadav.  While the activists questioned the silence of other rights watchdog namely the National Commission for Minorities (NCM).

TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale approached the rights panel in this regard and it sought the action taken report from the state secretary. In the complaint, Gokhale stated that the government machinery under the BJP rule  “acted like a bystander by siding with a rioting mob” despite large-scale violence against a religious minority community.

TMC leader said that a mosque and two Muslim shops were vandalized during a rally taken out by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other RSS outfits.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the violence, the Tripura High Court on October 28 directed the state government to file its reply on preventive measures taken by it and submit its plan to scuttle the design of stoking communal passion on or before November 10.

Meanwhile,  NCM is yet to take notice of violent attacks on minorities in this north east state. Activists said it is unfortunate that the national minority panel has been failing to protect minorities in these trying times.
