SC dismissed PIL filed against political party using religious slogans.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a PIL in which a political party was barred from chanting the slogan of Jai Shri Ram during the West Bengal elections as well as the Election Commission's decision to hold assembly elections in eight phases in the state.

Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and Justice A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramaniam told the petitioner-advocate Manohar Lal Sharma that he should approach the High Court if he believes that any election rules are being violated as per the Representation of People Act (RPA).

Sharma argued that he was against religious sentiments and was consistently using the slogan of Jai Shri Ram citing a political party.

Sharma urged the apex court to stop this religious activity and religious slogans during the elections in West Bengal.

The bench reiterated that the apex court is not the right forum, and it should move the High Court.
