New Delhi: The Delhi Police have identified three cops who thrashed five Muslim men mercilessly and forced them to chant the national anthem in North East Delhi during the 2020 pogrom.

The special investigation unit of the Crime Branch questioned more than 100 police personnel and scanned a number of documents, including duty charts of the policemen deployed from outside during the riots, The Indian Express reported quoting a senior officer. “Almost after 17 months, police have zeroed in on three policemen, and senior officers have been informed. A lie-detector test will be conducted on them after taking their consent,” the officer said.

One of the five victims, Faizan, had died days after being assaulted by Hindutva rioters and policemen. The entire incident was captured on camera. The video had gone viral on social media.

The police and India’s right-wing government has drawn criticism for purportedly siding with Hindutva trouble makers and saving them in connection with the pogrom.
