Umar Khalid and Khalid Safi acquitted in a case of Delhi riots – but have to stay in jail

New Delhi – December 3 (Urdulux) Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid has been acquitted in a case related to the Delhi riots. Umar was already granted bail in this case. Along with Umar Khalid, Khalid Safi, a member of United Against Hate, has also been acquitted. However, both Khalid and Saifee will remain in jail as they are in judicial custody under the UAPA for conspiracy to riot. Umar Khalid was arrested on 13 September 2020 in Delhi riots related cases. He has been in jail since then.

According to media reports, Delhi’s Kakardoma court has ordered the acquittal of Umar Khalid in the case registered in Khajuri Khas police station. A case was registered against Khalid and Saifee based on the statement of the constable. The constable had alleged that on February 24, 2020, the mob pelted stones near the Chand Bagh Bridge during the violence, in which both of them were at the forefront. The charges were not proved in court.

According to the FIR, when the policemen on duty entered the parking lot to save their lives amid stone pelting and violence, the angry mob entered the parking lot, attacked the policemen and set fire to the vehicles. Omar and Safi were included in the case. But their presence on the spot could not be proved by eyewitnesses and other sources.

The court acquitted both after a detailed hearing. Earlier, while granting bail, the court said that he cannot be kept in jail on the basis of half-baked charges.

Umar Khalid is also an accused in other cases related to the Delhi riots. In another case, a case has also been registered against them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Delhi Police continues to oppose Umar Khalid’s bail. In a recent case, opposing Umar’s interim bail plea, the Delhi Police had said there was a possibility that Umar could spread false information through social media while on interim bail.
