Warangal: Two bookies held for online betting, Rs 2.05 crore seized

Warangal police commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi said that the Prasad, who used to run a readymade garment shop in Hafeezpet in Hyderabad, had wanted to make easy money and started betting on cricket matches in 2016 with his friends.

Warangal: In a major achievement, the Kakatiya University Campus (KUC) police led by Inspector K Janardhan Reddy have arrested two bookies for betting on cricket and for their involvement in online gambling and seized Rs 2.05 crore in cash, seven cell phones, 43 bank passbook and ATM cards from their possession here on Monday. The arrested were Madishetti Prasad of Vijayanagar Colony in Hanmakonda and Abhay Vilas Rao Petkar of Choria in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra.

Disclosing the details at a press conference here on Monday, Warangal police commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi said that the Prasad, who used to run a readymade garment shop in Hafeezpet in Hyderabad, had wanted to make easy money and started betting on cricket matches in 2016 with his friends. “He began the illegal online betting in 2018 using smart phones and also met a Mumbai-based organizer besides meeting Abhay, who is running a website for betting. Meanwhile, Ramchandrapuram police in Hyderabad arrested Prasad and his two friends for betting in 2019. However, Prasad came in Hanamkonda and re-launched the online betting site,” the CP said, adding that Prasad and Abhay Vilas Rao had been nabbed by the police at Prasad’s house in Hanamkonda on Monday when the latter had come to collect his share in the profits.

“Prasad was appointed as the online betting bookie in the two Telugu states through the online betting website maintained by Abhay. This allows online betting participants to pass on the user name and password of the accused from Abhay to people who have previously paid money either personally or online to the betting participants via WhatsApp. Through these, clients can participate in online cricket and three-cards betting. Prasad maintained bank accounts on benami names to handle transactions and also purchased some land,” said the CP.

Tarun Joshi has congratulated Central Zone DCP K Pushpa Reddy, Hanmakonda ACP Jitender Reddy, KUC Inspector Janardhan Reddy, SI Sampath, AAOs Prashant, Salman Shah, Head Constable Malla Reddy, Constables Ashok, Madhu and Jagadish for busting the cricket busting racket.
