Sangareddy: In a show of communal harmony, a Muslim man bought the Kanakadurga laddu in an intensely fought auction at Mamidipally village in Kandi Mandal of Sangareddy district on Sunday night.

The Hindu community in the village install Goddess Kanakadurga idol every year to mark Navarathri festival. Before taking the idol for immersion, the idol committee auctions the laddu. Mohammad Fareed (31), who works as a village revenue assistant, took the permission of the Idol Committee to participate in the auction. After an intensely fought auction, Rajireddygari Rakesh Reddy, a youngster, walked away with the first laddu having bid Rs 45,000 against Fareed’s Rs 43,000.

In the auction for the second laddu weighing four kgs, Fareed fought all the way and took home the laddu with a bid of Rs 55,000. Interestingly, Fareed, who was elated after winning the laddu in the auction, decided to distribute the laddu among all the village elders on Tuesday. “I want to distribute the laddu to Muslims, Hindus and Christians in the village on Tuesday,” Fareed told Telangana Today.

The 31-year-old Fareed said they always participate in Hindu festivities with their friends and neighbours including Vinayaka Chavithi and Dasara, but no one other than Hindus had bought the laddus so far.

Hailing Fareed for spreading brotherhood among the people of all the religions in Mamidipally, MPTC Amar Singh said it was not merely Fareed but all the Muslims and Hindus in Mamidipally and neighbouring hamlets live like brothers here.

Sarpanch Polimera Ramulu said Fareed’s gesture will strengthen the bonding between all the religions in the Mamidipally in the days to come. Rakesh Reddy said Fareed not only won the Laddu but also the hearts of Hindus by participating in the auction.
