Delhi Police files chargesheet in Bulli Bai and Sulli Deal case
The chargehseet filed by the police in the case is 2700 pages long. Out of these, 2000 pages are dedicated to the Bulli Bai app and 700 pages are for the Sulli Deal app.
Delhi Police’s Cyber Cell has filed a chargesheet in the Bulli Bai and Sulli Deal apps case. The chargesheet, filed by the Cyber Prevention Awareness & Detection Center (CyPAD) of the Delhi Police on March 4, named Omkareshwar Thakur and Neeraj Bishnoi as key accused in the case.
Bulli Bai and Sulli Deal were online platforms being used to harass Muslim women. Users of these platforms put up pictures of women without their consent and conducted fake auctions. The two apps, hosted by GitHub, came to the limelight last year and were shut down after an outrage.
The chargehseet filed by the police in the case is 2700 pages long. Out of these, 2000 pages are dedicated to the Bulli Bai app and 700 pages are for the Sulli Deal app.
Neeraj Bishnoi has been made the main accused for the Bulli Bai app case, while Omkareshwar Thakur has been made an accused for the Sulli Deal app case.
Omkareshwar Thakur, the maker of the open-source app, was arrested by the IFSO unit of the Special Cell on January 8. He has been charged with sections 153A, 153B and 354A(3) of the Indian Penal Code, read with sections 66 and 67 of the IT Act.
Neeraj Bishnoi, who was arrested by the police from Jorhat in Assam on January 6, has been charged under 53A, 153B, 354A and 509 of the IPC, read with 66 and 67 of the IT Act.
What are Sulli Deal and Bulli Bai apps
Created in July 2021, Sulli Deal app was a platform to harass Muslim women. The users posted derogatory comments and conducted auctions of women. While no actual auction took place, the intent was to harass women. The main targets were women who were active on social media.
Days after Sulli Deal became the centre of controversy, Bulli Bai app came to light. It was a similar app with the same kind of derogatory content.
When the makers of the two platforms, hosted by GitHub were arrested, it was found that they two were in touch.
