Woman murdered by in-laws for dowry, not bearing sons in Muzaffarnagar

The police said accused persons have not been arrested so far as they are on the run.

A woman identified as Shaheen Fatima was tortured and murdered by her in-laws for not bearing sons and not fulfilling their continuous demands for dowry. The incident took place on Wednesday at Sikandarpur village under Charthawal police station area of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district.

The police said accused persons have not been arrested so far as they are on the run.

Fatima’s father Azhar Ali told Muslim Mirror that her husband used to beat her and demand more dowry. ”Even yesterday he demanded Rs 10,000. I sent Rs 5,000 to him as I could not arrange the full amount. Despite that, they killed my daughter,” Ali says and starts crying over the unfortunate incident.

They also used to harass and beat her for not bearing sons. Fatima had two daughters. She had a son but he could not survive. ”Her in-laws used to tell her you give birth to daughters only but we want sons,” Ali said.

Charthawal Police Station in-charge Jay Prakash said that an FIR has been registered and attempts are underway to arrest the accused persons.

The FIR has been registered under sections, 498-A and 304-B, of IPC against the victim’s husband Mohammad Abbas, his father Hasan Abbas, mother Khairul Nisha and younger brother Chand Mohammad. The section 304-B deals with dowry deaths and persons convicted under this section may be punished with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than seven years but which may extend to imprisonment for life. The section 498-A deals with torture of a woman by her in-laws and convicted persons may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years.

The victim’s family said that the body was sent for a post-mortem examination. But they are yet to receive its report.

The body was buried today. Her family says they want justice and strict punishment for her murderers.
